Tawny Willoughby was diagnosed with skin cancer aged just 21 after sunbathing and using tanning salons up to five times a week.
She has since suffered six separate bouts of the disease and has to visit a dermatologist every 6-12 months - usually having patches of skin cancer removed after each checkup.
The 27-year-old has now shared a picture showing her horrific scars and burns in a bid to discourage others being irresponsible in the sun or tanning salons.
Her photo has now been shared almost 50,000 times, with Facebook users praising her bravery and courage for showing off the impact of the disease.
Alongside the picture, Tawny wrote: "If anyone needs a little motivation to not lay in the tanning bed and sun here ya go! This is what skin cancer treatment can look like. Wear sunscreen and get a spray tan."
The nurse, from Alabama in the US, explained that she became addicted to sun beds after finding her "tan faded very fast".
But she warned: "You only get one skin and you should take care of it. Learn from other people's mistakes. Don't let tanning prevent you from seeing your children grow up. That's my biggest fear now that I have a two year old little boy of my own."
Skin cancer affects around 113,000 people and claims almost 2,800 lives per year in the UK alone, according to the charity Cancer Research UK.
Ninety per cent of people diagnosed with all forms of the disease survive 10 years of more, the charity said.
The chances of contracting skin cancer are heightened by the use of ultra-violet tanning devices as well as solar radiation, experts warn.
And mother-of-one Tawny said after her Facebook post went viral: "I've had a few people tell me they are giving up tanning after seeing this. [It] Makes me really happy to be able to help someone save their skin and possibly their life."
One supportive friend wrote: "Proud of you for posting this! You're such a brave and strong woman. You made it and it's going to only get better for you starting now! You're in my prayers daily. Love you."
