Long Island authorities say one person died and five firefighters have
been injured in an explosion and blaze at a Port Washington home.
Newsday reports multiple fire departments responded to the blaze on Prospect Avenue. There was no information on the fatality.
Mary Kate Liebman tells The Associated Press she was outside her mother’s home across an inlet from the fire site and saw a fireball shoot about 30 feet into the air after 8 p.m. Tuesday.
She says, “Everything shook and you could feel the heat.” She says she heard one big explosion followed by multiple smaller ones.
Angela DiCaterino was on a boat and still felt the impact. She says when she went on deck to see what was happening, there were “big, red flames.”
