A Maine mother has been
sentenced to six months in prison for driving 123 miles per hour
(198kph) with her two small children in the car.
Cheryl Gilson, 26, pleaded guilty to charges of driving to endanger,
endangering the welfare of a child and driving more than 35 miles per
hour (65kph) over the speed limit. In April, she was clocked travelling at about twice the posted speed limit when she was on a highway near Portland.
Her two children, age three and five, were in the vehicle, and neither was sitting in a car seat, as required by law.
Because of the high speed it took a state trooper 10 miles (16km) to get close enough to stop her Hyundai Sonata, police said.
When she was stopped, she said she was in a hurry.
Gilson has a history of speeding and driving under the influence, including multiple license suspensions and a revocation, officials said.
In July, she was charged with driving while drunk with one of her children in the car. She is awaiting trial on charges related to that incident.
