Facebook and Instagram users vent anger on Twitter as social sites go down

Twitter users have vented their anger as Facebook and Instagram have both gone down[GETTY]

The sites, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, suffered an outage around 5pm leaving users venting their frustration on rival Twitter.

The terms 'Facebook and Instagram' and #NowFacebookIsDown were both trending as tweeters posted about the outage on both sites.

Facebook has been out of action for more than 20 minutes with some users getting intermittent access to the service.

It is not clear what has caused the outage.
